Appearances do not deceive, not even behind important design like the flacon of perfume that draws inspiration from a diamond. Name: Lady Million, design: ‘eighties, eccentric and maximalist, for aspiring rebels with wisdom, ideas against the mainstream and wardrobe à la page. The new women’s fragrance by Paco Rabanne winks at its masculine counterpart 1Million and through its packaging, realized by designer Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, expresses the audacious temperament of a woman, bold and  light and “not easily sidetracked”.


Anne Flipo, Béatrice Piquet, Dominique Ropion, the “noses” behind the fragrance, have encapsulated in the category of sculpture-flacons the luminosity of a blossoming, boisé soul, sweet as raspberry jam, dense in meaning. An extraordinary example of the perfect harmony between content and container that interprets the style of the couturier, synthesizing the experience of a recognizable style through the perception of the material that already in itself is a collector’s item. After all, as Paco Rabanne himself loved to repeat: “a perfume has to be as loaded with significance as it is light to wear”.

Books are among the only few things which never go out of fashion. The book Guide to the Cemeteries of Europe, by Fabio Giovannini (Alternative Press, pp.165), printed back in 2000, is a typical example of current events and research. The special guide is dedicated to those particular tourists without prejudices or taboos, wishing to go beyond the traditional sites identified by tourist- guidebooks.


The guide shows how the cemeteries, considered by everybody as very sad places, are in reality beautiful gardens, monumental parks, enchanted places, outdoor art galleries. That reveal ancient memories. They stir up emotions, are places of meditation and invite to enjoy a “different kind”. Funerary Art, in order not get trapped in a vision of Art separated from society and from its time.

The most important and rich in artwork are those from the  nineteenth century. Père-Lachaise in Paris, opened in 1804, the Jewish cemetery of Prague, Genoa’s monumental cemetery, Highgate cemetery in London, the cemetery in Lausanne, the Monumental in Milan and Verona. All of them preserve the graves of famous people who have made great our time and our old middle-class families.

During the years of Queen Victoria and Pope Pius IX, cemeteries were neutral zones where bodies were portraied naked and in seductive poses, against a growing sexual repression, statues of voluptuous women, dead or at rest, multiplied; pairs of lovers, naked bodies entwined to skeletons.

Many graves are real works of art that were created by the deceased when he was still alive as the last “chance” to show one’s social and economic roles. In most cases they represent the mirror of social and class differences through the various historic transitions.

Cemeteries obviously they are personal and arbitrary paths, Giovannini’s guide offers a map to travel in places in between death and life, between the present and the memory of the past. As written by James G. Ballard “A visit to Père-Lachaise in Paris adds a year to life”, true statement as long as the visitor is in the right spirit.
